Sarkozy looks more and more like he's going to win convincingly. I had hoped Royal could pull it off but it looks now as if she hasn't a hope in hell.
I'm not feeling very comfortable with the direction in which Europe is moving.
Now we have Angela Merkel in Germany, an unabashed Reaganesque Americaphile.
Sarkozy is maybe even more so.
That means the balance in the Eurozone is gone. Europe is making a definite swing to the right.
I'm afraid this will also mean that we will increasingly be dragged into the American imperial experiment. We'll be pulled into permanent war via the back door, through a professional army (very different from 'our sons and daughters', eh). Unnoticed, until we are throroughly entrenched.
I'm also thinking, the EU will become solid with these two shoving us along to an European superstate. We little countries will have nothing to say any more. The EU constitution will be shoved through (with the help of Balkellende's rrrrr-left coalition government - actually, you can put money on this) by perhaps not calling it a constitution any more but a treaty. Change a few sentences and Bob's your uncle!
I'm really not feeling comfortable with the direction I'm sensing ahead.
I feel like I'm in a stormy river being rushed along and ahead be waterfalls.
One thing's for sure. If Sarkozy is elected, France is in for a rude awakening.
He's going to shake that country up and change the lifestyle of the French totally. The country will never be the same again. Sarkozy's a doer, not a talker... a very clever politician and once elected he will stay at the top for a very long time - of that i'm also fairly sure.
I used to be so very pro-Euro. I expected the Euro parliament to become increasingly democratic. I thought we'd develop into an enlightened coalition of independent states, bringing prosperity and stability to the world. I thought we'd take our peacekeeper role in the world seriously. I thought we'd help expand the UN. I thought the spirit of the EU was intact. Was I ever wrong.... had someone told me ten years ago I'd become anti-EU, I would have declared them mad. How things can change. eh?!
